Mar 10th, 2010 at 6:00PM: There's more to Washington, DC, than politicians and lobbyists, although I'm sure Cazimiro captured some of them in this photo. This black and white moment captures the essence of our nation's capitol on a typical night - cars and pedestrians share the street with the glow of democracy guiding their path home, or wherever they may be heading.

Mar 7th, 2010 at 10:00AM: Non-smokers probably won't be too excited by the news, but cigar smokers will rejoice. The Washington DC City Council passed a measure last week that eases smoking restrictions on hotels in our nation's capital. The Special Event Exemption Emergency Act of 2010 carries an amendment that offers a way for hotels to be exempted from the city's smoking ban. If you prefer your hotels sans puffing, ...

Jan 30th, 2010 at 2:30PM: Tourists at the National Archives will no longer be able to document their visit, once a ban on photography inside the building goes into effect.
About a million people visit the National Archives each year and though flash photography is already banned inside because of the damage the ultraviolet radiation can cause to the old documents, it's estimated that 50,000 flashbulbs still go off ...

Jan 6th, 2010 at 2:00PM: Last year wasn't bad for everyone. The Smithsonian Institution returned to past glory, logging more than 30 million visits. Action at the Smithsonian hasn't been this high since before the 9/11-related travel market slump. The 18 museums and galleries -- and the zoo -- saw an up-tick of 19.4 percent in 2009, up from 25.15 million visits the year before. The fact it's free to visit probably helped. ...

Dec 27th, 2009 at 10:00AM:
Around 3pm yesterday afternoon, Washington's Reagan National airport suffered some substantial damage from a burst water main pipe. Passengers arriving at the airport were greeted by several inches of water in the baggage claim area, and by 6pm, most of the airport had been shut down. As you can see in the video above, the amount of water was so great, that it was pouring out of the side of ...

Dec 24th, 2009 at 9:00AM: And you thought airline food was nasty ...
Airport restaurants have been spanked hundreds of times over the past year for food safety violations, according to a USA Today review of inspection records. Check it out – close to 800 restaurants in 10 airports had tuna and turkey sandwiches that weren't kept cold enough, raw meat getting a little too chummy with ready-to-eat meals, rat ...

Dec 21st, 2009 at 3:00PM: It's not exactly shocking to see that New York City is the most expensive city in the United States. Groceries, gasoline and other items tend to run a tad more than twice the national average. Whether you rent or buy, you'll spend a fortune in this city, where the average price for a home is $1.1 million and an apartment, on average, will cost $3,400 a month.
So, how can so many bloggers live ...

Dec 20th, 2009 at 12:00PM: A new bill passed by the Washington, D.C. city council is already getting the hotel community excited over the possibilities. When Mayor Adrian Fenty signs it into law, gay marriage will be legal in our nation's capital. For the hotel industry, that means a larger market from which to draw wedding clients and pump up some revenue in what has been a dismal market for the travel and hospitality ...

A monstrous storm ran up the East Coast yesterday, burying parts of the country in more than a foot of snow and making life a living hell for road-trippers and airline passengers. As of last night, five deaths were reportedly caused by the storm. Fourteen inches fell on Reagan National Airport, setting a single-day ...

Dec 5th, 2009 at 10:30AM: Airlines are using the little planes for longer runs, these days. According to the Las Vegas Sun, the average regional airline flight hit 461 miles in 2008, up profoundly from 274 miles in 2009. That's an increase of 41 percent! This is an industry-wide trend, so shopping around isn't likely to help you get a larger jet. The major carriers are relying on regional affiliates, so you'll probably be ...

Dec 4th, 2009 at 10:30AM: Ever flown through Washington Dulles airport? Well, then you've probably spent some time being shuttled between terminals on their horrible "mobile lounges".
These people movers really are a pain in the backside - they are slow, uncomfortable and a really good way to show just how backwards US airports are, especially to international passengers. And I'm not even the first person here on ...

Nov 29th, 2009 at 5:00PM: After four days off, the world will slide behind its desks again on Monday morning. They'll try to get back into the swing of work life, but it won't be immediate. So, as they ease back into productivity, many will push into the shopping world they dodged three days earlier on Black Friday. The hotels will be waiting for them, with more than 60 of them pushing deals to try to get in on the holiday ...

Nov 8th, 2009 at 2:00PM: Extra fees charged by airlines, the "new normal," are so popular that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has gotten into the game. And, bitching about these fees is equally popular, prompting the European Parliament to sound off like its members are Ryanair passengers with full bladders and no coin for the slot.
At issue is a planned $10 charge for Europeans coming to the United States. ...

Visitors to the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., have a rare opportunity to see the first map that used the name "America" for the New World.
The Library has the only surviving copy of the famous Waldseemüller map, created in 1507 by Martin Waldseemüller, a German cartographer living in France. The map was a major departure from earlier maps in that it relied less on the ...

The trouble is that not many of us have actually had a chance to do it. There's any number of reasons why, ranging from the oft-cited lack of American vacation time to the hassle of logistics planning such a trip. Well my friends, ...
